WARNINGS

THE FOLLOWING TABLE MUST BE CONSIDERED BEFORE PLANTING OR SOWING

• Do not use on heavy soil.
• The fumes released from the soil treated with BASAMID are highly injurious to all plant life.  Therefore the waiting period must be adhered to.  It is very important that all fumes are removed from the soil before the sowing of crops.  This can be assured by means of the "safety test" (described below).
• Avoid contaminating adjacent crops during application.
• Weed seeds which are dormant at the time of application may not be fully controlled.
• Poisonous by swallowing and contact.
• Toxic to fish and wildlife.
• Store away from food and feed.
• Keep out of reach of children, uninformed persons and animals.

PRECAUTIONS

• Wear latex gloves, respirator and goggles when handling BASAMID.
• Do not handle with wet hands and moist gloves.
• Wash contaminated clothing.
• Do not eat, drink or smoke during application or before washing hands and face thoroughly.
• In case of skin contact, rinse in running water for not less than 15 minutes.
• Prevent contamination of adjacent areas, other crops, rivers and dams.
• Destroy empty container and never re-use for any other purpose.

• Dra lateks handskoene, respirator en skermbril gedurende die hantering van BASAMID.

• Was besoedelde klere.
• Moet nie eet, drink of rook gedurende toediening of voordat hande en gesig gewas is nie.
• In geval van velkontak, was deeglik met seep en water.
• Spoel besmette oë vir 15 minute of langer met lopende water.
• Voorkom besoedeling van voedsel, voer, drinkwater en eetgerei.
• Vernietig leë houer en moet vir geen ander doel gebruik nie.

Directions For Use

DIRECTIONS FOR USE USE ONLY AS DIRECTED

BASAMID is a soil sterilant which is used as a preplanting treatment for seedbeds and potting soils.

METHOD OF APPLICATION

• The soil must be moist (to a depth of 20 cm) and in fine tilth to ensure proper penetration of the fumes.  Remove all stones and plant residues.  Excessive wet soil must first be allowed to drain. 
• Distribute granules uniformly over soil surface and immediately incorporate in the soil to a depth of 10 - 15 cm by means of a fork or rotavator.
• Seal soil within 2 hours of application by means of a short large droplet irrigation.
• In the case of sandy soil additional rolling of the soil surface is necessary.
• Under very warm and dry conditions a thin plastic cover or a repeat irrigation will improve sealing.
• Aerate treated soil by means of a fork after the required waiting period (see warning).
• Do not cultivate deeper than the treated 10 - 15 cm of soil.
• Apply the "safety test" one day after cultivation.
• If traces of gas are detected, aeration followed by "safety test" must be repeated.

TREATMENT OF POTTING SOIL

• Mix the required quantity of BASAMID thoroughly with the moist potting soil mixture.
• Cover with a polythene film and leave for 3 weeks.
• Then spread the mixture on a clean surface away from plants.  Aerate repeatedly to allow gas to escape.
• Apply the "safety test" if germination is satisfactorily the soil is ready for use.  If not, repeat aeration.

SAFETY TEST

• This test will indicate whether any traces of gas are still present after treatment.
• Take 6 representative samples of the treated soil to the depth of 15 cm.
• Bulk these and place + 200 g in a preserving jar.
• Moisten if necessary.
• Sprinkle garden cress seeds (Lepidium sativum) or Lettuce seed on top of the soil sample.
• Seal immediately and place in a warm room.
• Repeat test with untreated soil for control.
• If no gas is present, germinating should take place after 48 hours in the case of watercress seed and 4 days in the case of lettuce seed.

BASAMID is 'n grondsteriliseermiddel vir die voorafbehandeling van saadbeddings en potplantgrond.

METODE VAN TOEDIENING

• Om deeglike deurdringing van die gas te verseker, moet die grond klam (tot op 'n diepte van 20 cm), sonder kluite en fyn bewerk wees.  Verwyder alle klippe en plantreste.  Oormatige nat grond moet eers toegelaat word om te dreineer.
• Versprei die korrels egalig oor die grondoppervlak en meng onmiddellik deeglik met die boonste 10 - 15 cm laag grond.  Gebruik 'n vurk of 'n kapploeg.
• Verseël behandelde grond binne 2 uur na toediening deur middel van 'n kort growwe druppelbesproeiing.
• In die geval van sanderige grond moet die grondoppervlak ook gerol word.
• Onder uiters droë en warm toestande sal 'n dun plastiek bedekking of herhaling van besproeiing verseëling verbeter.
• Behandelde grond moet na die vereiste wagtydperk (sien waarskuwing) met behulp van 'n vurk deurlug word.  Moenie dieper as die behandelde 10 - 15 cm laag spit nie.
• Toets die grond een dag na deurlugting deur middel van die "Veiligheidstoets."
• Indien die toets die aanwesigheid van gas aantoon, moet die deurlugting en die "Veiligheidstoets" herhaal word.

BEHANDELING VAN POTPLANTGROND

• Meng die voorgeskrewe hoeveelheid BASAMID deeglik met die klam potplantmengsel.
• Bedek met 'n plastiekseil en laat staan vir 3 weke.
• Versprei mengsel hierna op 'n skoon oppervlak, weg van plante en deurlug herhaaldelik sodat gas kan ontsnap.
• As die "Veiligheidstoets" die vereiste ontkieming aantoon is die grond geskik vir gebruik.  Indien nie, herhaal deurlugting.

VEILIGHEIDSTOETS

• Hierdie toets is om uit te vind of daar nog gas in die grond teenwoordig is na behandeling.
• Neem 6 verteenwoordigende monsters van die behandelde grond tot op 'n diepte van 15 cm.
• Meng hierdie monsters en plaas ongeveer 200 g in 'n inmaakfles.
• Maak die grond effens klam indien nodig.
• Sprinkel tuinkerssaad (Lepidum sativum) of slaaisaad op die grondoppervlak in die fles.
• Sluit fles onmiddellik hierna en plaas in 'n warm omgewing.
• Herhaal toets met onbehandelde grond vir kontrole.
• As ontkieming na 48 uur vir tuinkerssaad en 4 dae vir slaaisaad plaasvind is daar geen gas meer teenwoordig nie.
